AI / ML Specialist – Automation Engineer (Mid-Level)

DHA Data Governance Support

Location: Hybrid / Remote (as contract allows)
Clearance: DoD Secret clearance
Experience Level: Mid-Level (3–6 years)

Role Overview

The AI / ML Specialist – Automation Engineer supports the DHA Data Governance program by designing, prototyping, and implementing AI-enabled automation capabilities that improve metadata management, data lineage, data quality, and self-service discovery across enterprise data assets.

This role focuses on practical application of AI and automation—including NLP, semantic search, and workflow orchestration—to enhance governance workflows while operating within DHA-approved tools, security constraints, and compliance requirements.

The engineer collaborates with data governance leads, data engineers, and platform teams to evaluate AI readiness of COTS tools, develop proofs-of-concept (PoCs), and transition successful automation patterns into repeatable, operational workflows.

Key Responsibilities

Primary Responsibilities

  • Evaluate COTS data governance, catalog, and analytics tools for AI/ML readiness, including capabilities for semantic search, automated lineage generation, metadata enrichment, and AI-assisted data quality.

  • Lead development of AI-enabled prototypes and PoCs using Python, SQL, and/or R to demonstrate automation opportunities supporting DHA data governance objectives.

  • Apply approved DHA and enterprise AI platforms to test metadata extraction, classification, semantic tagging, summarization, and lineage inference use cases.

  • Design and implement automated workflows for metadata review, approval, publication, and governance enforcement.

  • Configure and prototype data quality monitoring, including AI-assisted anomaly detection, semantic validation, and alerting.

  • Develop NLP-enabled search and discovery prototypes and lightweight dashboards to support self-service access to governed data assets.

  • Support User Acceptance Testing (UAT) and validation of AI-enabled governance features with DHA stakeholders.

Supportive Responsibilities

  • Advise governance and platform teams on future automation opportunities for metadata capture, lineage, and quality enforcement.

  • Integrate workflow automation tools (e.g., Power Automate or equivalent) for ingestion triggers, notifications, approvals, and alerts.

  • Optimize existing sync and ingestion scripts for performance, scalability, and reliability, incorporating AI-driven normalization where appropriate.

  • Support pilot demonstrations showcasing end-to-end traceability and lineage using AI-assisted techniques.

  • Assist in automating versioning, SLA enforcement, and governance metrics, leveraging AI tools to assess data quality and compliance.

Required Qualifications

  • 3–6 years of experience in software engineering, data engineering, automation engineering, or ML-adjacent roles.

  • Strong hands-on experience with Python and SQL (R preferred but not required).

  • Experience building automation scripts, workflows, or pipelines in enterprise data environments.

  • Working knowledge of AI/ML concepts (e.g., NLP, semantic search, embeddings, classification, inference), with an emphasis on applied use cases rather than model research.

  • Experience evaluating or integrating COTS platforms and enterprise data tools.

  • Understanding of data governance fundamentals, including metadata, lineage, data quality, and publishing workflows.

  • Ability to communicate technical findings clearly to non-technical and governance-focused stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience supporting federal health, defense, or regulated environments (DHA, DoD, HHS).

  • Familiarity with cloud-based AI services and managed GenAI platforms approved for government use.

  • Experience with workflow orchestration or automation tools (e.g., Power Automate, Step Functions, Airflow).

  • Exposure to data catalogs, metadata platforms, or governance tooling.

  • Experience supporting PoCs, pilots, and controlled deployments in compliance-focused environments.
